Born in 1960, Alessandro Sangiorgi graduated from the Conservatory "G. Verdi" in Milan in Piano Performance, going on to study composition and conducting. He began his international career in 1989 after his extremely successfully tour to Israel with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. This was followed by an immediate offer from the Teatro Municipal of San Paolo in Brazil to take the position of Musical Director, a post which he held until 1993. During this time he conducted: Puccini’s LA BOHEME, TURANDOT and IL TRITTICO, Donizetti’s IL CAMPANELLO, Mozart’s DON GIOVANNI, Rossini’s L’ITALIANA IN ALGERI, Verdi's AIDA, Guarnieri’s PEDRO MALAZARTE, as well as numerous symphonic concerts and ballet performances.
While acting as Musical Director at the Teatro Municipal of San Paolo he was continually guest conductor at various Opera houses and festivals with-in Brazil and Europe: St. Gallen (UN BALLO IN MASCHERA), Symphony Orchestra Brasileira, Symphony Orchestra of the city of San Paolo, Symphony Orchestra of Porto Alegre, The National Symphony, Croatian National Theatre of Spalato (RIGOLETTO), Festival Verdiano in Busseto (UN BALLO IN MASCHERA), Teatru Manoel in Malta (DON PASQUALE), the State Orchestra of Plovdiv (Bulgaria), the Philharmonic Orchestra of the city of "Dinu Lipatti" (Romania), Orchestra "Guido Cantelli" of Milan (I DUE BARONI DI ROCCA AZZURRA from Cimarosa, LE DUE CONTESSE from Paisiello), the Regional Orchestra of Tuscany, the Divertimento Ensemble of Milan and Andreoni’s SI, a world premiere with the NeueVocalSolisten of Stuttgart, Theatre of Adria (CARMEN and DON PASQUALE), and the Teatro Comunale all’aperto of Cagliari (LA TRAVIATA).
From 1996 to 1999 Alessandro Sangiorgi was the Principal Music Director at the “Atelier Bottega” in Arezzo where he conducted performances of IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, LA BOHEME, GIANNI SCHICCHI, I DUE BARONI DI ROCCA AZZURRA, L’ELISIR D’AMORE, and DON PASQUALE. From 1995 to 1998 he was invited to be Principal Guest Conductor by the Teatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro, where he conducted IL TRITTICO as well as many other symphonic concerts and ballet performances.
Starting in 1998 he became the Principal Guest Conductor of the Symphonic Orchestra of the city of Paranà (Brazil) and in 2002 after a unanimous vote, was made Principal Musical Director and Artistic Director. He then began primarily working with the Symphonic Orchestra, while still conducting many of the Operatic and Ballet productions such LA BOHEME, GIANNI SCHICCHI, LA SERVA PADRONA, DON GIOVANNI, RIGOLETTO, and LA TRAVIATA and in 2009 CARMEN and THE NUTCRACKER.
In 2006 he made his debut at the National Teatre of Beograd with LA TRAVIATA, followed by an invitation to become the Principal Guest Conductor where he conducted performances of UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, AIDA, IL TROVATORE, L’ITALIANA IN ALGERI, LA BOHEME, and DON PASQUALE. He also made his debut at the National Theatre of Ostrava (Czech Republic) in 2006 with MANON LESCAUT and was invited to be a Guest Conductor there as well. He recently made his Slovakian debut at the National Theatre of Bratislava with CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA, PAGLIACCI and LUCREZIA BORGIA.
During the 2008/2009 Season he conducted Marco Tutino’s LA LUPA in Ostrava, PAGLIACCI, and the world premiere of Filippo Zigante’s IL SOFFIO DELLE FATE. In Milan he recently conducted Mozart’s REQUIEM at the Chiesa del Carmine. In addition, he made his Russian debut with the Symphonic Orchestra of Krasnoyarsk- this step in particular was a huge personal success for him.
In the 2009/2010 Season he is conducting the ballet LA SILFIDE at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome. His other engagements in 2010 include a recital with Francesca Patanè and the Orchestra of Magna Grecia in Puglia and Donizetti’s IL CAMPANELLO as well as Rimsky Korsakov’s SHEHERAZADE at the Theatre Politeama in Lecce.
Alessandro Sangiorgi recently received the honor “Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Solidarietà” from the President of the Republic of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, for his musical contributions abroad as Principal Musical Director and Artistic Director.
